Recently, the Biden Administration proposed rescheduling marijuana from Schedule I (most restrictive) to Schedule III (less restrictive) on the Controlled Substances Act ‐ but the truth is, that move keeps marijuana illegal federally.

There were more than 170,000 arrests for marijuana in 2021. Enough is enough. It's time to stop arresting people for marijuana.

Right now, there is a bill before the US Senate that would do just that. The Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act (CAOA) would end federal criminalization and expunge marijuana convictions.

An overwhelming 88% of U.S. adults say that marijuana should be legal for recreational or medical use. Despite many states legalizing marijuana, there are still hundreds of thousands of marijuana arrests in the U.S. every year.

The Biden Administration's announcement to reschedule marijuana adds more urgency to this issue. It will not stop marijuana arrests or expunge past convictions.

We need comprehensive reforms, like the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act, to chart a new path forward. Marijuana laws need to be rooted in health, equity, and justice.
