Yvonne B. from Wisconsin was the winner of the Propeller experience to "Win a Trip to the Red Rocks Show of Your Choice in 2024" and chose to attend a King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard show, which took place in September 2024. Below are some of Yvonne's highlights from the experience.
I have been using the Propeller site to sign petitions, support causes and learn about issues for years - because I love being able to do so in one place, and the causes mirror mine and my husband's values. But I'm not so sure I ever thought I would actually win an experience. To have won the 'Any 2024 Red Rocks show' trip was beyond my expectations. It checked off a bucket list item for us - and so much more!
Being at the iconic Red Rocks venue (in row 6 nonetheless!!!) was the ultimate highlight. But the band did not disappoint. We chose to see King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard because of their diverse and extensive music catalog. Neither myself nor my husband were that familiar with them before seeing the concert, but now we are huge fans. They use difficult and rarely used timing signatures (like 5:4 and 7:8) and they covered at least four music genres in one show - mind blowing! They are for sure one of those bands that gets better after seeing them live.
What we really liked, and what fits with the Propeller purpose, was that they posted a statement about inclusiveness at the start of the show. Also, we were seated right in front of the sign language interpreters. It was so amazing to watch them sign the songs and really added to the experience.
The Source Hotel, where we stayed as part of the prize package, is located in the River North (RINO) arts district. It is trendy and modern. With a food court on-site, it was easy to have high end sushi for dinner and spectacular Reunion Bakery goods for breakfast, plus three other restaurants for lighter meals. There were large open areas filled with lounging spaces and artist shops on the lower levels, and a hot tub with views of Denver and its surrounding foot hills on the top floor. The hot tub was appreciated after our first day meeting up with a friend and hiking the Chautauqua trails at the foot of the Flatiron mountains in Boulder, CO. We also toured the RINO area to view all the street art, including installations at the local library.
Then there was the Meow Wolf Denver part of the experience. It is hard to describe - basically an interactive futuristic art exhibit that occupies an entire 4-story building. Not knowing what to expect, we felt like Alice in Wonderland. Something new, creative and exciting at every turn that stimulates your senses. Even the stairwells were full-blown art installations!
We can't thank Propeller and supporting organizations like Human Rights Campaign, and Natural Resource Defense Council enough for this fantastic opportunity to enjoy Red Rocks, King Gizzard, Meow Wolf and all that the RINO district of Denver has to offer.
