Science is one of our best tools for understanding and solving critical problems we face. It has informed policies that ensure the air we breathe and the water we drink is clean, that we have access to vaccines to protect us from deadly diseases, and has ensured the toys our children play with are safe.
In order to serve the public good, federal science must be strong and independent, protected by safeguards that guarantee its freedom from political interference, distortion, or censorship. But the last four years have eroded those safeguards. Now is the time to rebuild. To undo this damage and ensure that federal science can do its job effectively for all of us, it is crucial that the Biden-Harris administration works to strengthen scientific integrity at federal agencies and restore a robust role for science and evidence in government decisionmaking.
Tell the Biden-Harris Administration team that you want to see science and evidence restored in federal decisionmaking and give them researched recommendations from the Union of Concerned Scientists on how to achieve that goal.
To: President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris
In less than four years, the Union of Concerned Scientists logged nearly 200 attacks on science by the Trump administration. Now we must rebuild and build better at the same time.
I was heartened to hear you both mention the important role of science in your victory speeches. I will be watching to make sure you follow those words with actions. In order to serve the public good, federal science must be strong and independent, protected by safeguards that guarantee its freedom from political interference, distortion, or censorship.
Thankfully, the Union of Concerned Scientists has created a roadmap for how the federal government can restore science back to decisionmaking processes: www.ucsusa.org/resources/roadmap-science-decisionmaking. The recommendations set a blueprint for strengthening scientific integrity across all science-based federal agencies, while also providing more detailed recommendations tailored for specific agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Science plays a crucial role in advancing our national well-being. If science and evidence are prioritized and government experts are supported, our nation is better positioned to tackle all its most pressing problems, from COVID-19 to climate change to endangered species protection. Please do all you can to restore the robust role for science and evidence in government decisionmaking.
