For decades, the American Petroleum Institute (API) has been a powerful force against US action on climate change. Representing the interests of its oil and gas company members, API has a long and ugly history of spreading disinformation on climate science and lobbying heavily to oppose any limits on climate pollution from burning fossil fuels.
API is unequivocally a clear and present danger to public health and the environment. And yet, fossil fuel companies that claim to support climate action in public continue to lead and fund API's disinformation and anti-climate lobbying behind closed doors.
We need your voice to tell BP and Shell to follow through on their pledge to the fight against climate change.
BP and Shell must leave API and make good on their claims of support for science-based climate action. There is no more time to waste.

To: CEOs of BP and Shell
At the beginning of this year, your competitor, French oil conglomerate Total SE became the first major global oil company to leave the American Petroleum Institute (API), citing misalignment with the trade group on climate policy. This was a significant step in improving transparency and one that your company should take to honor your own climate pledges.
For decades, API has spearheaded efforts against US action on climate change, from running misleading climate ad campaigns to funding climate-deniers in Congress who actively oppose the Paris Climate Agreement. If you are to actually support your climate pledges in good faith, your company can no longer retain its membership in the American Petroleum Institute.
It's time to stop funding the denial of climate science and obstruction of climate action.
I urge you to step up as a leader in the oil and gas industry by renouncing climate disinformation and withdraw your membership from API. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
