Sign A Petition Protecting LGBTQ Kids In Schools

As students across the nation head back to school, join The Ally Coalition and Freedom For All Americans in sending a message to our leaders that LGBTQ Kids deserve to be protected and respected in their schools!

Sign this petition and The Ally Coalition and Freedom For All Americans will send a copy to Betsy DeVos and your state's Education Secretary.

Your message will read as follows:

I am writing to you at the start of the 2 school year to express my unequivocal support of the LGBTQ students who attend your schools. Time and time again, the current presidential administration and Secretary Betsy DeVos have shunned any and every opportunity to protect the LGBTQ kids in your schools and in schools across the nation. That is why I am asking you to take the necessary steps to ensure that all kids are protected in your classrooms, locker rooms, theaters, and other spaces on campus.

All students, including LGBTQ youth, should have the opportunity to grow, thrive, and succeed in the classroom and in extracurricular activities without fear of harassment, bullying, or discrimination. That is why I am asking you to implement proactive education policies and guidelines that support LGBTQ students in school, including:

  • Providing sensitivity trainings to educators, administrators, staff, and coaches
  • Honor every student's requests to be referred to by their personal gender pronouns
  • Allowing all students, including transgender youth, to participate in sports teams and clubs that align with their gender identity
  • Permitting students to be vocal about their support for LGBTQ equality while at school and express themselves by wearing t-shirts, holding meetings, or making positive statements in personal or student-led publications
  • Ensuring that all students can use the locker room or bathroom that aligns with their gender identity
  • Having at least one gender-neutral bathroom in each school

No one should be singled out for discrimination or unequal treatment, especially youth who are trying to attain an education during their most formative years. And together, these six steps are an important part of ensuring that all youth are protected in schools. A staggering 31 states across America lack explicit and comprehensive protections for LGBTQ people from discrimination in their lives, and 24 states have no law protecting students from bullying on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

It's urgent that we fix this patchwork of laws in those unprotected states and secure a federal law that protects everyone, no matter where they live, as soon as possible. But in the meantime, it is up to you ensure that all kids in your school, regardless of their identity, are treated with dignity and respect. I hope that you are up to the task.
