Our democracy and our democratic institutions are being challenged now as never before. Americans of all political persuasions are asking themselves, "What does good government look like?" "What does bad government look like?" And, "How are we doing?" Many Americans are deeply troubled by the course of events over the last several months, weeks, days – even hours.
Following the election, millions of Americans became activists overnight - pouring into the streets, in record numbers, in record time. The ACLU has been on the front lines this whole time. This is personal for me – and I know it is for you.
I have a personal message for you in my new TED talk. Please watch and share – let's have a conversation about where we're going as a country and what we're going to do about it.
In my TED talk, I use a 14th century painting from Siena to talk about the enormous gulf between what good government is and what our government is becoming.
We – and we the people – must be loud and clear in our demands to President Trump, his administration, and all government officials. We must act. Democracy must not be a spectator sport.
Please watch my TED talk – and then take action.
I am inspired every day of this resistance by your resilience and commitment to core American values. Thank you for being in the fight with me.
- Anthony D. Romero, ACLU
