Propeller exists to inspire activism and help build movements for change

Charity needs to be reimagined.

As the scale of the world's problems continue to grow, and the government becomes increasingly broken, we put more and more trust in nonprofits to help solve them.

But in a time when old methods no longer work and innovation is what's needed most, we're relying on an industry that is forced to be risk-averse.

Regular businesses can spend whatever they want to hire talent and market their product to maximize their profits, all without scrutiny.

Nonprofits are expected to save the world, but are shunned for every cent they spend on "overhead".

So Propeller flips this idea on its head by being an unabashed for-profit benefit company whose success is based solely on the scale by which we help causes connect with supporters and create real, lasting change.

And we give nonprofits the opportunity to join Propeller and reach new people without any upfront costs to do so.

We believe that those using their social platform for good should be celebrated. And that includes you, as a member of our community.

We want people and businesses to put their best efforts into changing the world. That's why for every action you take, and the greater impact you make, you're rewarded on Propeller.

We're creating a culture where social influence is used for creating measurable impact, not likes. And a company that can take advantage of the same methods as a corporation, while operating with the transparency and accountability of a nonprofit.

Being an active citizen is essential for a healthy democracy, and real change is only possible when it comes from the many and not the few. We hope that Propeller makes that idea more accessible for all.

Thanks for joining us.

What We Stand For

Environment

We understand that time is running out to address climate change and make a just transition to a more sustainable society.

Democracy

We support openness, accountability, and transparency from government and leaders and believe that democracy works best when every eligible voter is able to and does cast a vote.

Gun Violence Prevention

We can imagine a world where kids can go to school without fear of being shot. Common-sense gun laws like background checks just make sense. The amount of senseless gun violence that happens in the US has to stop. We can and must do better.

LGBTQ Rights

People are people. We are working to create a society where LGBTQ people receive basic equal rights and are able to be open, honest, and safe at home, work and in their communities.

Immigration

We believe that diversity only makes us stronger. And when the government has the power to deny legal rights and due process to one vulnerable group, everyone's rights are at risk. You can't have justice for all without justice for immigrants.

Racial & Social Justice

We see racism and inequality as systemic issues that have to be actively addressed at the institutional level in a way that cut across society. Democracy only works when all people are treated equally.

Mental Health

It's time to get serious about how we address the mental health issues and that starts with making it safe for people to have an open conversation about their challenges. One in five Americans suffer from mental health issues. Many of them never reach out for help. We know that has to change.

Women's Rights

Women's rights are human rights. There is no place for violence, discrimination, and institutional barriers for women in the US.

Health, Wellness & Research

Investments in the power of science and research to find cures for some of the most terrible diseases facing humankind are essential. As are investments in personal health and well-being.

Our Theory of Change

Propeller harnesses the powerful role culture plays in society to inspire activism and build movements for change alongside our nonprofit partners.

By leveraging the platforms of cultural influencers and incentivizing engagement, we're able to connect with people outside of the traditional reach of nonprofits. And unlike most nonprofits, we're able to take risks and invest in new technology while being structured to quickly pivot between issues.

It all adds up to bringing new people into a movement doing what matters most when it matters most and being rewarded for doing it. The results to date have been great and we're constantly working to improve the experience and evolve the platform. We're just getting started.

How We're Funded

We are a purpose-driven company, and money is fuel that helps us realize our goals and the goals of our partners.

We are committed to creating a profitable business, as we believe the more profitable we are, the more impact we can create. But just because we are a for-profit, doesn't mean that we should have any less transparency or integrity than a nonprofit.

As you're probably aware, most tech companies take on millions upon millions of dollars from investors to reach profitability. In doing so, they become beholden to providing a financial return to the people and institutions that gave it to them.

We only want to be beholden to our users and the organizations we serve.

For this reason, Propeller has never received money from a venture capitalist and has accepted a total of just over $100k in seed funding since we started in 2015.

While one day it may prove to be necessary to go the same direction that most of Silicon Valley goes, we are committed to trying to maintain this path of independence first, as we feel it is the path that will ensure the most integrity.

In other words, we don't want a VC's need to maximize return on investment to take priority over maximizing impact for the causes we support.

Our funding comes directly from our users as well as select partner organizations who keep our platform free and accessible to all users.

More specifically, here are all the ways we are funded:

01Our Users

MEMBERSHIP We are now offering our community the opportunity to support Propeller through our Propeller Premier membership program, with 100% of contributions used to fund the free services and tools that support our campaigns. These are small, monthly or yearly membership contributions from our community who believe in our mission. We'll be providing members with exclusive reward opportunities and other perks on the platform, and regular updates on our impact.

'PROPELLING' SPECIFIC CAMPAIGNS After completing an action, users are given the option to "propel" the campaign and help it reach more people by sharing the campaign or contributing money. If they make a contribution, we promote it to more users on Propeller and oftentimes through outside promotion as well. Users who propel actions on our platform are able to raise immediate awareness about the campaigns they want to support.

02Our Cause Partners

SPONSORED ACTIONS While Propeller is a free tool for nonprofits, we do offer cause partners a paid option where we help them reach a guaranteed number of new supporters. This requires a lot of effort from Propeller to make sure we are helping the organization's campaign get in front of the right audience and to achieve the desired results. The fees we charge for this service vary depending on the specific goals of the organization, however, our rates are significantly lower than the industry standard. Additionally, a major benefit of working with Propeller is our ability to reach audiences outside of the norm. We help organizations reach younger, and more diverse audiences in a way that is more cost efficient than they can typically do on their own. Overall, the number of organizations paying for our services is a very small percentage of the total number of nonprofits on the platform.

DONATIONS While there are so many ways to make change that don't involve money, nonprofits obviously still need funding themselves. When you donate on Propeller, there's a maximum fee of 20% (it's often less for our sponsored nonprofit partners) that is split between the payment processor for credit card & processing fees and Propeller. The payment processor charges 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction, and Propeller receives the remainder which is typically anywhere from 14-17%.

03Corporate Partners

AFFILIATES Propeller partners with a small number of social enterprises and mission-driven businesses that we believe match with our value, and features their products or services to our users. In doing so, users may choose to purchase their product or service and earn points, and Propeller receives a commission from the business for driving the transaction. While we do this very selectively, we believe it's a great way to shine a light on companies we want to support while helping fund Propeller.
